Map-i project: ethos
As part of my academic work at the University of Sunderland, I undertake research. through which I have had to find a way of articulating what it is that I do on a daily basis when working on architectural glass projects. As the majority of my work is site-specific, the first thing I turn [...]
Map-i: Mercator Revisited
Thanks to a concerted effort by many people who have helped me during the last few months, a new body of work has started to emerge in the last few weeks. There is still quite a lot of work to finish but it is great to see some conclusion taking shape. This weekend, a photoshoot of [...]
Mercator Conference
Today was the second day of the Mercator Revisited conference; another packed day of incredibly varied talks about different aspects of Mercator’s legacy; from the enduring appeal of his maps, globes and instruments which have provided subjects of study including its mathematical impact, the importance of typography and calligraphy on maps and impact of his [...]
Mercator conference
Yesterday was an inspiring day at the Mercator conference with an incredibly varied audience of speakers and delegates. I met cartographers of course, but also map librarians, mathematicians, map collectors and enthusiasts, art historians, fellow artists and curators. The StEM, the local regional Museum also opened a new exhibition ‘Mercator Digitaal” which features the earthglobe [...]
Mapping out the future…
Well it has been a while…. Happy New Year! Whilst the year has ended all things Mercator are coming together… I spent the Christmas holiday researching the life of Gerardus Mercator, the cartographer who invented the map projection as we mostly know it today and coined the term atlas. [...]
Mercator
The new mapping project being developed will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Mercator and will be based on the collection of the Mercator Museum in Sint-Niklaas in Belgium. I have just submitted a conference proposal for a talk about this project so fingers crossed!
Mapping: Mercator
A new body of work is being developed in the next year to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Gerard Mercator (1512-1594), born in Rupelmonde (Belgium) . I will be using the collection of the Mercator Museum in St-Niklaas, Belgium. I managed to pay a brief visit to the Museum last week and see the [...]
Mapping: Ingrid Calame
If you happen to be in Edinburgh between now and 9 October, do pop into the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh (next to Waverley Station) and visit the Ingrid Calame exhibition. This American artist traces roadmarking and maps these into intricate and sometimes colourful drawings. I was familiar with her work but its was great to [...]

Today I am travelling down to Liverpool to attend the opening of the Museum of Liverpool tonight. Tomorrow we are meeting the publisher to discuss the planned publication of a book I have compiled about the project and am hoping will be published in Autumn by a Liverpool based publisher and to be on sale [...]
